Time Management (Part 1)

“Time is the most valuable coin in life. You and you alone will choose how the coin will be spent. Be careful that you do not let others spend it for you!”

Time is a funny thing… when you’re younger it seems to take forever. A day seems like a week, a week like a month, a summer vacation like a year. As you grow older in life, time starts to fly by. It becomes something you wish you could freeze to enjoy, but regardless of your attempts, it just keeps on ticking. I’ve heard it said that, “Life is like toilet paper, the closer to the end you get, the faster it goes!” How true! However, I believe it to be a fact that:

“Until you value yourself, you won’t value your time”

John Maxwell has said that time management is an oxymoron. You can’t manage time, you can only manage what you do with the time given to you. Everyone gets 24 hours in a day, nothing more, nothing less. It’s what people do with that time that makes the difference. Do you ever wonder why some people in life can achieve so much and others are left clueless as to how they did it? They assume high achievers never have to pay bills, go shopping, run errands, etc.. The simple fact is that high achievers just know how to make their time count more than under achievers.

Over the next few days I want to talk about time, how I spend mine, how you spend yours, and who you should spend it with… have you ever noticed that: “People who have nothing to do usually want to spend their time with you!” We’ll talk about this.

I’ll leave you with this thought today:

“Guard well your spare moments. They are like uncut diamonds. Discard them and their value will never be known. Improve them and they will become the brightest gems in a useful life”

Back When I Knew it All (Part 5)

“Man I Don’t Know, Where the Time Goes, But it Sure Goes Fast”

I remember back when I knew it all, I thought I was immortal, thought I’d be in high school forever, and I thought I’d be friends with the people in high school until the day I die. I remember on my senior trip walking the beach with my boys and vowing that we’d be boys forever! Then we graduated, talk about a wake up call!

In Psalms, David asks God to teach him to number his days, to allow him to realize how short his life really is. In James, it says that our life is but a vapor, we’re here and gone in the blink of an eye. I think everyone needs to live life with this perspective: That before we know it, we are going to stand before God and be accountable for our lives. John Maxwell has a quote that rocked my world in getting this perspective:

  • “People will summarize your life in one sentence, pick it now.”

I’ve gone to several funerals this year and purposefully listened to what people said about the person that passed. Often and sadly I would hear things like, “He or She was a nice person” or “They were so funny, man could they tell stories.” I began thinking to myself… how sad. Their lives are summarized by telling a few jokes and being nice. God created us for a much higher purpose than that.

What is it God put in your heart to accomplish while you here? What sentence do you want people to summarize your life with? What will that dash in between 2 dates stand for on your tombstone?

I encourage you to pick the sentence you want people to summarize your life with and do everything you’re can to pursue that purpose in your lifetime.

The Perfect Day Off?

I had the day off yesterday and had a great time… it got me thinking. What does the perfect day off look like? Here are a few things that are included on my perfect day off:

  • Starbucksok… so maybe this is an everyday treat… but I love the Bux!
  • Reading - I love reading books and I could spend hours in Sbux, bookstores, and other places with my nose in books.
  • Running - I think I am actually addicted to running now… it’s my quiet place to get away and spend some time with God, worship, and listen to some sick sermons!
  • Movies - I’m a huge movie buff… Going to the movies is one of my favorite things to do
  • Gaming - I’m not a big gamer, but I go enjoy playing some Wii here and there… my next purchase…Super Mario Galaxy
  • Hanging with friends – going to a park or playground and just hanging out always makes for a great time on my day off.
  • Going out to eat – usually when I go out to eat it’s after a long day of work or after church and it’s late. On my day off I can really take my time and enjoy the people I’m with and grub until I can’t move!

I’d like to hear from you… What do you do on your days off that you absolutely love?
