Book Review: Get Involved by Tom Baker

Just over a month ago, I was at an event, and met a group of staff from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh. One of the guys I met was Tom Baker. After my initial conversation with him, I was very impressed, so I asked him out to lunch. We met at his office and he gave me his book, Get Involved.

After lunch, I was even more impressed by this guy! He fired me up! He is involved in everything you can imagine. If there is something to be involved with in the City of Pittsburgh, Tom Baker is involved with it! The best part of being around Tom though, is that afterward an interaction with him, you want to get involved in everything you can.

That’s what this book is all about. It is a quick and easy ready, but an inspiring one. It is filled with short nuggets on how to make the most of your 20′s and 30′s.

My biggest takeaway was that there are a million and one opportunities for all of us to make a difference and make something of ourselves, we just need to choose to go for it.

If you’re a teenager, twenty-something, or in your thirties, read this book. It won’t disappoint.

Book Review: Five Dysfunctions of a Team

This is hands down the best book on team work I have ever read. This book was recommended by Mike Ash, a Pastor at Next Level Church. He said, “If Patrick Lencioni writes something, our staff reads it.” After reading it, I can see why.

The book is written in story form. It’s a story about a company who hires a new CEO, who after two weeks of working with her newly inherited staff, realizes they don’t operate well as a team at all. So she takes them on a retreat and teaches them the Five Dysfunctions of a Team in hopes to get them to work as a team. How the rest of the story plays out is very interesting! You need to read it!

The Dysfunctions are listed below in the pyramid.

The big takeaway for me was the importance of healthy conflict within an organization. Conflict is essential if you’re going to be an effective team, make progress as a team, and bring out the best in each person on the team. For me, someone who naturally despises criticism, it really helped me recognize the value of it.

This book is essential to anyone who has a job, works on a team, plays on a team, or coaches a team.

It’s one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. Buy it here:
