What Matters Most (Part 1)

“I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters, you were doing it for me.” -Matthew 25:40

One thing God has really been teaching me is to make what matters most to him, matter most to me. God’s most precious possession is people! God loves people! Now don’t get me wrong, I love people, but I’ve had to do some repenting over the last month when it comes to how I treat God’s prized possessions.

I think as twenty somethings it is easy to get focused on ourselves . . . where we’re going, what we’re going to do with our lives, who we’re going to date and marry. We build our reputations up on Facebook, try to become friends with people who can do something for us and get us somewhere, and get so focused on work that we forget about what we’re really here for: to make a difference in peoples lives. So here are some things God’s been teaching me along these lines:

  • God dealt with my heart months ago, “Whose kingdom are you trying to build yours or mine?
  • How are you treating people who can do absolutely nothing for you?
  • We can get so focused on doing the work of the ministry that we stop doing ministry!
  • The best minute I’ll spend today is the one I spend investing in people!
  • People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.
  • Everyday I ask myself, who can I add value to today. At the end of the day I ask, who did I add value to today.

How do you treat the least of these?? Does what matters to God matter to you? How are you treating the people who can do absolutely nothing to benefit your life?

Back When I Knew it All (Part 2)

You Show Me Your Friends and I’ll Show You Your Future
One of the biggest barrier shattering truths I’ve learned is how important the people you surround yourself with are. If you’ve ever heard me tell my story, you’ve heard me talk about my “oompa lumpa” friend who changed my life with a quote about friends. He said to me:
“Bubba, friends love you the way you are, but real friends love you enough to not let you stay where you are.”
At that moment, I evaluated my life and relationships and determined that I would become purposeful in choosing who I surround myself with. I want to surround myself with people who will bring out the best in me and challenge and encourage me to reach my maximum potential.

Here are some nuggets that have helped me in this area:

  • If you’re following nobody, you’ll become nobody
  • “As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens another man!”
  • Most people won’t be in your inner circle because you want them to be, you have to ask them
  • You will go no higher in life and in purpose than the immediate circle of those who surround you in daily life.

I will probably do a whole series sometime on the people you surround yourself with.

Who do you purposefully hang out with that will take you to a higher level? Challenge you? Help you reach your potential?

People that Have Changed My Life (Part 4)

People That Know Me and Know They’ve Helped Me

These are people in which I am the most thankful for. These are people who saw potential and gifts in me when nobody else (including myself) did. They’ve loved me unconditionally, have risked a lot by investing in me, and spent countless hours pouring into my life on purpose. These people have been multipliers in my life:

My Mom - My mom was a huge influence in my life growing up… she taught me to love me for who I am, to be outgoing and have a great time, and to be myself! I love my momma!

Mike SteidelHe took me under his wing and taught me what it was to work hard, to dream as big as I can and go for it, to be sharp, to get a college education (haha Mr. S if you’re reading this!), to have the highest standards I could. He’s taught me so much more… but those are the big ones!

Judy SteidelWhen I lost my mom in 2002, I went to her Bible Study and it got me fired up about God. She took me under her wing like a son, got me going to Victory, and gave me a passion for Christ like I’ve never had before.

Laura Steidel – She believed in me when nobody else did… encouraged me… and never gave up on me. I am so grateful for her friendship. I would not be who I am today if it had not been for her!!

Zack Blair - Zack and I came to Victory in 2003 and have pursued God and ministry together. I look up to him in so many ways… He is like a big spiritual brother. He constantly challenges me . . . it’s a privilege to have him in my life.

Ben Rath - I am pretty sure Ben knows the impact he’s had on my life. This guy takes everyone who he comes in contact with and takes them to new levels. He has done that for me and I am so grateful.

Pastor Larry Bettencourt - Perhaps no one has made a greater impact in my life than this man. He believed in me, poured into me, loved me unconditionally, and pulled my gifts and potential out of me. He is an amazing pastor, mentor, and friend. He helped me have my “One Start” on the way to an “Eternal Finish” I love you PL!

There are obviously way more people that have poured into me… those are some of the biggies. This concludes my “series” on people that have changed my life.

Who are some people that have intentionally poured into you? Do they know how big of an impact they’ve had in your life?
