A Door Holder

For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness. -Psalm 84:10

I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than . . .” I believe this is a heart that God wants us to have when it comes to serving Him.

So many times when it comes to serving God, especially as we grow and mature, we can get to the point where we think we’re above certain tasks. What used to satisfy us, doesn’t any more, our attitudes shift, we think we should be doing “more important” tasks. We become frustrated that we’re not advancing as we think we should.

Anyone else guilty of this other than me?

God’s really been showing me that He wants me to have the attitude of the psalmist. Recognizing that if I’m doing anything for God, it’s better than anything else I could be doing with my life.

I’m recognizing that it doesn’t matter if the only thing I’m asked to do is to hold a door for the rest of my life, if it’s for God, I’ll do it, I’ll be faithful, I’ll have a great attitude and I’ll do it with all of my heart.

Faithfulness is a much bigger issue than we’ve made it out to be. Faithfulness is a heart issue. Promotion is a God issue. If we take care of the faithfulness issue, God will take care of the promotion issue. In His timing.

Are you willing to be a door holder for God? What areas of your life have you let a bad attitude sneak in because you forgot who you’re really working for and why you’re really doing it? Repent, and with humility, become a door holder!

Death of a Dream

“If God gives you a dream, and the dream comes to life and God shows up in it, and then the dream died,  it may be that God wants to see what is more important to you – the dream or Him. The impact God has planned for us doesn’t occur when we’re pursuing impact. It occurs when we’re pursuing God. At last after a lifetime of striving, God was enough. Not God and impact or God and ministry. Just God.”

-Phil Vischer

My favorite verse in the Bible is Matthew 6:33 – Seek First the Kingdom of God, and all these things will be added unto you. Putting God first really is the key to experiencing life to the fullest, however, all too often we put ourselves first, in the name of putting Him first. “God if I’ll put you first, I know all my dreams and plans will come true!”

Well, what if God has a different plan and dream for your life than you do? Sure, God will give you the desires of your heart, but only when you desires line up with His desires. We’ll only get to that point when we’re willing to let our dreams and desires die.

God is longing for us to get to a place where we willingly lay down our dreams, desires, wants, and plans in exchange for His dream, His desires, His wants, and His plans. The place where God alone is enough. Only then can we really pursue God’s dream for our lives.

I don’t know about you, but I’m sick of trying to do things in my own strength. I’m laying down my dreams, will you?

The Only Way Out

I’ve been listening to this sermon over and over again. This part wrecked me:

“You can’t get through this in your own might, own effort, or your own thinking. I’m going to bring you through and your songs are going to be about me.  It’ll be about divine deliverance, not human effort. Nothing you did, but something I did. Your song will be about Jesus and not about yourself. Your testimony will not be “Look I figured it out, I got the plan to get through and get the promises. No, your story will be about meeting the giants and not knowing how to go forward until God’s Holy Spirit came upon you.”

Something I’m noticing that holds me back is having faith in things I shouldn’t have faith in.

I’m finding I have faith in myself, my ability to produce, my faith, my confession, my gifting, my calling, my bank account, my job, my church, my pastor, my favorite bible teacher, my favorite scriptures, my ______.

The problem? A whole lot of faith in a something that can’t produce anything: ME.

In II Tim 1:12, Paul said, “I know in WHOM I believe.” He had faith in one person: God. That’s it. No matter what you’re going through – the only way out is God. Not your plan, not someone’s advice, not your church, not your friends, systems, confession, tradition, or anything you can do on your own.

He alone is your victory. He alone can get you through. He alone is your source. He alone is your purpose, your dreams, your plans. He alone is everything you need and everything you want. He alone is God.

So quit putting your faith in anything but Him.

Where have you misplaced your faith? I promise you, if your faith is anywhere other than in God, you’re in trouble!
